Choosing a tailor in Bangkok
Bangkok has more tailors than you can count, and choosing between them may be genuinely difficult – because, from the shop floor, most tailors here may look pretty much the same. The differences are in the cloth and how the jacket is built underneath. Neither is visible until you know what to ask.
So here is who we are: Romeo & Juliet Tailor’s House opened in 1972 and is still run by the same family, now into its third generation. Your suit is drafted from a pattern we make for you, in cloth you choose in person, and built to a construction we agree with you before any work begins.
What a bespoke suit from us actually is
Your suit is drafted to your measurements from scratch – not adjusted from a stock pattern in your nearest size. We will often measure both sides of your body separately, because almost nobody is symmetrical, and we account for posture, shoulder slope and how you actually stand rather than how you stand when someone’s holding a tape around you.
You choose the cloth in person, many of which are from bolts you can see and handle. You choose the cut. You come back for two fittings and we correct what needs correcting before it’s finished. If it still isn’t right at the second fitting, there’s a third, and we don’t charge you for it – the pattern is ours, so a correction is a correction, not a negotiation.
The cloth
Our suiting starts at good wool blends – high wool content, from mills that know their business – and runs up through pure wool, fine Italian wool, and cashmere/wool blends if that’s where you want to be. Linen, cotton, and even silk options are also available.
We don’t make suits from pure synthetics.
Beyond that, we won’t push you up the range. A good blend will outlast a Super 150s that you wear too hard – and we’d rather tell you that than upsell you into buying something that won’t work for you. How it’s built
We offer half-canvassed and fully-canvassed construction, and for rush orders, fused. Most of our clients choose half-canvassed – the canvas stitched through the chest and lapel so the jacket holds its shape over years rather than seasons. Fully-canvassed goes a step further and moulds to your chest over the first year; it takes longer to make. We’ll talk you through which suits how you’ll wear it, and we invite you to inform us of any construction preferences when making your consultation appointment, so that we can plan ahead.
How long it takes
At least five or six days for a first suit, including two fittings. We could go faster, but for rush orders, a half-canvas construction may not be available. If you’re in Bangkok on a short stay, message us before you land with your arrival and departure times and we’ll plan ahead.
Order again from anywhere
Once we have your pattern, we keep it for around five years. Choose a cloth by message and we’ll make it and ship it – no measuring, no return flight.
